Cooper’s Cave Tournament (with updates)
By Ryan | July 8, 2009
SATURDAY: H-I bowed out of the Cooper’s Cave Tournament quarterfinals with a 13-6 loss to co-host the Saratoga Stampede on Saturday. H-I jumped out to a 4 run lead in the top of the 1st, but gave two back in the bottom. Saratoga would score runs in every inning, off four different H-I pitchers. Joe Durante, Tyler White, and Jake Ross all had 2 RBI singles for the game.
H-I finishes the tournament 3-3 and in the top 8 out of 18 teams from all over the Northeast.
FRIDAY: After securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the Cooper’s Cave Tournament, H-I could not hold off Saugerties losing 8-4. Patrick Foxton got his first start on the hill, and surrendered three early runs, but settled in to blank Saugerties the rest of the way through 3 innings. Rich Maxam gave up 3 runs in the 4th, Zack Lusby gave up 1 unearned run in two innings, and Lee Foxton allowed a run in the 7th. Chris Hughes led H-I with a 3 for 4 afternoon, Jack Sullivan had two hits off the bench, and Lee Foxton had a 2 RBI single.
H-I won the “White” pool with a 3-2 record and +0 run differential. They advance to meet Saratoga again on Saturday at 3pm in the quarterfinals.
THURSDAY: H-I battled back from an early 3-run deficit against South Kingstown (RI) Post and scored on a throwing error by the catcher in the 6th to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the 7th, Cory Gogola reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced on a wild pitch. Pinch runner Taylor Jaquays advanced to 3rd on a ground out and scored on a two-out infield single by Joe Durante for a 6-5 win. Justin Corney pitched four innings of scoreless relief, allowing 1 hit. The victory puts H-I at 3-1 and in good position within their pool for advancing to the weekend single-elimination round.
WEDNESDAY: Defending Coopers Cave Tournament champions Trumbull (CT) Post topped Helmuth-Ingalls 4-3, but not without some drama. Tyler White singled with 1 out in the top of the 7th, and Will Blazer bunted him to second. Taylor Jaquays then hit a flair down the left field line that the LF had to make a full diving catch on to preserve the lead and end the game. Jack Sullivan had a 2 RBI single for H-I. Justin Corney got the loss in 5 innings of 4-run ball. The loss dropped H-I to 1-1 in pool play.
In the evening, H-I bounced back with a 7-4 win over the Newburgh Nuclears. The game was nip-and-tuck most of the way, until a 4-run H-I 6th inning gave them some breathing room. Lee Foxton was 2 for 4 with a bases loaded triple for 3 RBI, Jake Ross was 3 for 4, and Joe Durante and Chris Hughes also had 2 hits apiece. Tyler White started and went five innings for the win, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits. Cory Gogola and Jake Ross each pitched an inning of relief to close out the game. H-I improved to 2-1 in pool play.
TUESDAY: Helmuth-Ingalls got off to a good start in the Cooper’s Cave Tournament in Saratoga Springs NY, with a 9-8 victory over co-hosts the Saratoga Stampede on Tuesday night. H-I jumped on top early and had a 9-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. But a feisty Stampede team, and plenty of walks, made the game a tight finish over the final six outs.
Chris Hughes was 4 for 4 and Cory Gogola was 3 for 4 with two RBI for H-I. Jake Ross picked up the win in 5+ innings of work, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on only 2 hits. Gogola picked up the final six outs for the save.
The win gets H-I to 1-0 in pool play, and a 10-7 record on the season. The road doesn’t get any easier for H-I, as they are back in action Wednesday morning against Trumbull (CT) and back on the field in the evening against the Newburgh Nuclears.

Game #16: Fort Schuyler at Helmuth-Ingalls
By Ryan | July 6, 2009
| Fort Schuyler | 3 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 9 | 12 | 0 |
| POST 232 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 5 | 9 | 1 |
CLINTON- Fort Schuyler jumped out to an early lead and Helmuth-Ingalls failed to capitalize on two bases-loaded, no-out situations leading to a 9-5 Fort win on Monday.
Tyler White started for H-I and was victimized by some hot bats for Fort, giving up 5 runs in two innings on 7 hits to take the loss. Zack Lusby pitched a 1-2-3 third inning, but then could not get out of the fourth, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits in 1 complete inning. Cory Gogola held Fort at bay through three innings, and Lee Foxton pitched a scoreless seventh, but it was the offense that could not provide the spark for H-I.
Tyler Heck was 2 for 2 and scored three runs, reaching base all four times he came to the plate. Gogola and Foxton also chipped in two hits apiece.
The loss drops H-I to 8-6 in the league and a half-game behind Fort in the Blue division. Fort holds a tie-breaker by virtue of their two-game sweep of H-I on the season. H-I is off to Saratoga Springs on Tuesday to participate in the Cooper’s Cave Tournament for the third consecutive year and will get right into action with an 8pm game against the host Saratoga Stampede.
