Stat correction
By Ryan | July 14, 2010
With reference to Major League rule 10.17, the following correction has been made to the official team statistics:
- Jordan Doroshenko is credited with a no-decision against Whitestown on 7/5.
- Patrick Foxton is credited with a win against Whitestown on 7/5.
The decision was made based on part (b) of the above referenced rule, which requires the official scorer to grant the win to the relief pitcher when the starting pitcher does not complete five innings of a game that lasts more than 6 defensive innings. Doroshenko completed four innings against Whitestown, and thus does not qualify for the win.

H-I sweeps NH, stays alive
By Ryan | July 14, 2010
Webmaster’s Note: The previous post, a game recap for Tuesday’s loss to Parkhurst, erroneously stated that Helmuth-Ingalls was eliminated from the playoffs. The post has been edited to note that the playoff chances remain alive. A further explanation will follow in tonight’s game recap.
CLINTON - Clinging to the slightest of playoff aspirations, Helmuth-Ingalls Post #232 took care of the first order of business by completing a season sweep of New Hartford Post #1376 on Wednesday night by a score of 10-3. The best that Post #232 can hope to do at this point is finish the County season at 10-8 and tie with New Hartford, who sits after 10-6 after tonight. Some help is needed, with New Hartford still having Whitestown and Clonan remaining on the schedule. Meanwhile, H-I concludes the regular season on the road against Utica Post.
Cody Doyle allowed three runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Patrick Foxton (2-2) who closed out the victory. Joe Durante was 2 for 2, including a 2 RBI single and 2 runs scored. Zach Lusby had two hits with an RBI, and Doyle added a 2 RBI double in his only at-bat in the sixth.
H-I will look to close out the season on a high note and maintain their slight hopes for the playoffs as they take on Utica Post #229 on Thursday at 6:00 PM at Murnane Field.

Playoff hopes fading
By Ryan | July 14, 2010
ROME - Helmuth-Ingalls Post #232 saw their 2010 playoff hopes all but disappear, with a disappointing and surprising 5-4 defeat at the hands of a previously 1-14 Parkhurst Post #1448. The loss, coupled with Adrean Post’s victory over Love Post on Tuesday, means H-I can do no better than a tie for third place with New Hartford Post and/or Adrean.
Ben Rolewicz went the distance for Post #232 and took the loss, despite only allowing 3 hits. However, his defense failed him in a number of key situations leading to four unearned runs.H-I would mount a rally in the top of the seventh, putting the tying run at second base after consecutive two-out doubles by Jack Sullivan and Joe Durante, before Jordan Doroshenko grounded out to end the game.
H-I falls to 10-12 overall and 8-8 in County play. They conclude their home schedule on Wednesday against New Hartford Post #1376.

Cooper’s Cave Recap
By Ryan | July 14, 2010
This summer’s trip to Saratoga for the Cooper’s Cave Tournament did not result in advancement like last year’s visit, but based on the week’s start and the blazing hot temperatures, the final standings were satisfying.
On Tuesday night, Helmuth-Ingalls Post #232 ran into Division II Saint Rose-bound pitcher Matt Coleman and the Saratoga Stampede and suffered a 10-0 mercy-rule shortened loss. Coleman limited H-I to 2 hits over 6 innings. Zach Lusby made his first appearance of 2010 for H-I, but took the loss allowing 3 runs over 3 innings.
A hot and steamy Wednesday saw Post #232 saddled with two tough games, a noon contest against Trumbull (CT) Post #141 and an evening matchup with West Seneca Post #735. In the afternoon tilt, the H-I defense struggled to make plays, while the bats struggled to capitalize on numerous opportunities, in a 12-2 loss. Against West Seneca, the offense jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but the opposition posted a 10-run inning off of three H-I pitchers on the way to H-I’s third straight 1o-run loss, 16-6.
Post #232 got one in the win column on Thursday as the slumping bats exploded against the defending Vermont State Champions, Colchester Cannons. Jack Sullivan made his first ever Legion pitching appearance and went the distance in another mercy-rule shortened game, and H-I won the game 20-6.
Despite slim hopes of advancing, Post #232 battled a tough Saugerties squad on Friday. The teams exchanged runs early on, before Saugerties put up a 9-4 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, H-I battled all the way back to take a 10-9 lead on a two-out Cody Doyle single. With the time limit looming, the game was called and H-I was victorious.
Post #232 finished the week 2-3 in pool play. Their 2010 record now stands at 10-11 overall.
The Anaconda Indians, from Scotia, went on to win the 2010 Cooper’s Cave Tournament going undefeated through pool play and the single-elimination round.

H-I hotter than the weather
By Ryan | July 6, 2010
CLINTON - On a sweltering July day, Helmuth-Ingalls Post #232 stayed hot on the field as they swept a key split doubleheader with victories over Whitestown Post #1113 and Love Post #406. The wins extend the H-I streak to four straight dating back to last Thursday, as it seems the calendar and the H-I fortunes turned at the same time.
In the first game, Jordan Doroshenko gutted out 4 innings in a 6-4 victory. He was helped by his defense along the way, including a sparkling diving catch by 2B Patrick Foxton on a line-drive up the middle that ended a Whitestown rally. Jack Sullivan and Joe Durante continue to lead the charge for H-I, each with 2 hits. Sullivan and Foxton added 2 RBI each.
After Rich Maxam struggled in relief to start the 5th, Foxton came on and slammed to door over the final three innings to earn the save. The win brought H-I to .500 in league play and 7-8 overall.
The nightcap saw plenty of offense early on, followed by a pitcher’s night as both H-I and Love Post struggled through the relentless heat and humidity. Love struck first with a leadoff double by Anthony Ripp and an RBI single by Cody Buhler. But H-I answered back with 4 runs in the bottom of the first.
The 4-1 lead proved to be all that starter Ben Rolewicz would need, as he limited Love to two more hits over the final 6 innings. H-I managed just six hits, led by Durante’s two, and earned the season sweep over Love.
Post #232 heads to Saratoga for the Cooper’s Cave Tournament beginning Tuesday night on a four-game winning streak that has rejuvenated their playoff aspirations. They now stand at 8-8 overall and 8-7 in Oneida County play.
