CLINTON- One night after a come-from-behind 9-8 win over Roberts, Helmuth-Ingalls posted a victory by the same score - only this time the opponent was the defending state champions Anaconda Indians. It was the backend of a home-and-home nonleague series, in which each team won on their home field. Anaconda beat H-I 15-1 last Thursday in Scotia.
After spotting the visitors a run, H-I wasted no time getting on the board as they knocked the ball around the park and had Anaconda on their heels in a four-run first inning. Anaconda would score runs in each of the first four innings, but in every case H-I responded to stay ahead.
Rich Maxam took the mound for his first Legion start and was effective through two innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits. Jake Ross pitched one inning of work, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 1 hit. Cory Gogola was credited with the victory for his two innings of work, also allowing 2 runs, while allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Tyler White got the final six outs for his first save.
Gogola led H-I offensively with 3 hits, including a first inning RBI double. White had two RBI and Jordan Doroshenko hit a long triple in the third inning that drove in two runs.
H-I improves to 8-5 overall for the 2009 season and has a critical league matchup against Whitestown Post on Wednesday. The game, scheduled for a 5:30 pm start, will be played at the SUNY-IT campus.
