CLINTON - Newcomer Jake Ross led Helmuth-Ingalls to a season-opening victory over Clonan 5-2, throwing a complete game. Ross scattered five hits and two runs, while striking out 10 batters.
H-I broke through for four runs in the 3rd inning, as Ross cruised through Clonan’s order. Zack Lusby led off the bottom of the 3rd reaching on an error. Tyler Heck was hit by a pitch, and Cory Gogola hit a deep fly ball to center, advancing Lusby to third. After Heck stole second, Lee Foxton hit a sharp single to the right side of the diamond, scoring both runners. Foxton advanced to second on the throw to the plate trying to get Heck. Chris Hughes then followed with a deep double off the base of the wall in right center that scored Foxton.
H-I added some cushion in the 4th, when Heck scored on a Gogola single past the shortstop.
Ross (1-0) - a graduate of Rome Catholic High School who did not play last summer after his previous team, Lee Post, could not field a team - did not allow a hit until two outs in the 4th, when Steve Scatko hit a triple over the head of Taylor Jaquays in right field, and then scored as the relay throw went out of play.
The win gets H-I off to a 1-0 start on the season, with a divisional tilt on Wednesday against Fort Schuyler at Delutis Field at 7pm.
