Sportsmanship, Team, and Triumph
By Ryan | May 21, 2008
As a result of the tragic death of Colorado Rockies minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh in 2007, Major League Baseball enacted a rule requiring base coaches to wear helmets while coaching “on the lines” starting in 2008. Since we in American Legion baseball follow MLB rules, the change means that our coaches will don helmets this season while on the field.
However, the rule was not adopted by the NCAA (or high schools, which follow the NCAA rules), but that may soon change. During a recent playoff game, the Oswego State head coach was struck by a line drive, resulting in a skull fracture, but fortunately nothing worse. That’s not the whole story, however, and I encourage you to read this story by Wayne Drehs at ESPN.com. I think you’ll find an incredible story centered around a terrifying situation, one that should make us all learn a little about sportsmanship, team, and what it means to be truly successful.
